Ollie tips Sheidel to take needed step up

Sheidel (Holy Roman Emperor x Laventour) has won nine races out of 10 starts at Ascot, but her rider Damien Oliver is not relying on that statistic to get the pair over the line in Saturday’s $1 million Winterbottom Stakes in Perth.

“It’s a great record to have on the track but it’s a pretty straightforward track for a horse coming here for the first time,” Oliver said. “We’ve seen quite a few of them (eastern-states winners) over the past few years.”

Dual wins to the former great Buffering and to the mare Ortensia as well as victory by the likes of Takeover Target, show that visiting horses rarely have trouble coming to terms with the course.

Oliver has been enjoying the past week catching up with family in and around Perth but it is all business this weekend as he attempts to snare the Winterbottom on the $11 chance.

“I think she will run well,” Oliver said.

“She’s got a great record at the track in her previous life over here in Perth but she wouldn’t have met a field like this before in Perth and it’s quite a strong race with a few of the eastern-states horses coming over.”

Sheidel, who was born and raised at Amarina, was purchased out of Perth by renowned Victorian owner and breeder Rob Crabtree and in 10 runs for her new owner, she has returned more than $400,000 in prizemoney. -racing.com
