Excellent Return for Promising Filly

The juvenile maiden at Canterbury on Wednesday attracted a very strong field of colts and fillies with a lean and racy miss by champion sire Exceed and Excel holding sway over her more fancied male rivals.

Making her debut for Chris Waller, having had one previous start for Peter Moody earlier this year, Overstep looked sharp and fit with two recent trials under her belt.

She raced up on the pace for Brenton Avdulla and kicked strongly down the running to win the 1200 metre maiden by a length and a half with blue-blooded Lonhro colt Star of Lonhro closing well for second.

A $400,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Michael Otto Bloodstock from the draft of Amarina Farm, Overstep runs for high profile New Zealand owner breeder Terry Jarvis.

“It’s a privilege to train for Terry Jarvis,” said Chris Waller.

“Peter Moody spoke highly of this filly, although my confidence was dented when I saw the strength of this race. Brenton Avdulla made it look easy with a beautiful ride.”

Overstep is the first winner for Elusive Desire, a metro winning half-sister by Elusive Quality (USA) to stakes-winner Secret Liaison. She died in 2015, her last foal a yearling colt by Excelebration (IRE).

Overstep is the tenth two year-old winner of the season for Darley’s champion sire Exceed and Excel, who stands at a fee of $110,000. -breednet.com.au
