The formidable combination of jockey Thomas Huet and the ever-improving mare Artistry (Shamardal x Lady Peony) was further enhanced in a rejigged Gr.3 Newcastle Newmarket (1350m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Newcastle Newmarket was originally scheduled for Wednesday’s meeting at the Beaumont track but the race was postponed due to surface water.

Tacked onto the end of the Rosehill Golden Slipper day program, the $125,000 contest featured 10 runners and it was the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Artistry claiming victory after swooping down the outside of the straight.

Huet and Artistry have now combined for an impressive six wins, with their only defeat coming first-up in the Group III Wenona Girl Handicap (1200m) when finishing fourth.

Peter Snowden hinted at a possible Group I Doncaster Mile start for Artistry, a four-year-old mare that has made a swift progression from her benchmark 70 win last preparation to Saturday’s maiden black type success.

“It’s a great result, Thomas (Huet) has built up an association with this mare so it’s pretty hard to take him off,” Snowden said.

“She’s just getting better and better, the Emancipation was the plan this preparation but after a set back it will be a bit difficult to get there now.

“Who knows, she might be a light weight Doncaster chance yet, we’ll have to wait and see.”

Artistry was born and raised at Amarina  for Western Australia-based Neven Botica, who was on track to watch the 4yo mare open her stakes account.

“I bred her myself, she is by Shamardal and her mum is in foal to Tavistock which is really exciting,” Botica said.

Artistry is a daughter of the unraced Belong To Me mare Lady Peony whose dam Zebizan is a sister to Group 1 winner Cronus and Group II winner Pravda as well as the unraced Milliyet the dam of triple Group 1 winner Samantha Miss. -AAP
