Third Bobbie Lewis in Zoutori’s Sights

Successful in the 2019 and 2020 editions of the Gr2 Bobbie Lewis Quality, Mathew Ellerton’s Zoutori (Zoustar-Atotori, by Haradasun) is back to the ‘scene of the crime’ in an attempt to record his third win in the 1200m sprint.

It’s interesting to note that Zoutori’s full-sister Kiku will also resume on Saturday, contesting the Gr2 Theo Mark Stakes at Rosehill for Chris Waller. A winner of just shy of $2m in earnings, a $160,000 Amarina Farm Inglis Easter graduate, Zoutori has an affinity with the Flemington track, recording eight top three placed finishes, including the Gr1 Newmarket Handicap.

Although asked to carry top weight of 58.5kg, the 7YO gelding should get a good run in transit and, being drawn in the middle of the line-up gives jockey Damian Lane the best option to head to whichever side of the course best suits.

With Queensland-trained runners enjoying a good run in Melbourne so far this season, Toby and Trent Edmonds’ last start Gr2 Missile Stakes winner Hard Empire (Hard Spun-Last Quill, by Last Tycoon), Tony Gollan’s Baller (High Chaparral-Fuwa, by Encosta de Lago) as well as Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted’s last start Gr3 winner Shooting For Gold (Shooting To Win-Amber’s Crown, by Excites) all look to be high quality chances.

Not seen since his third in the Gr1 Goodwood Handicap, Leon and Troy Corsten’s The Astrologist (Zoustar-Aquada, by Flying Spur) is yet to finish outside of the placings in six starts at the track and distance and, with a very good first up record, the 6YO gelding looks set to enjoy the drop in class after racing at Group 1 level in four of his last five starts.
