{"id":17132,"date":"2018-02-23T19:36:43","date_gmt":"2018-02-23T19:36:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/amarinafarm.com.au\/site\/?p=17132"},"modified":"2018-02-23T19:36:43","modified_gmt":"2018-02-23T19:36:43","slug":"sheidel-aiming-for-back-to-back-oakleigh-plate-wins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/amarinafarm.com.au\/site\/2018\/02\/23\/sheidel-aiming-for-back-to-back-oakleigh-plate-wins\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheidel aiming for back-to-back Oakleigh Plate wins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Connections considered retiring <strong>Sheidel<\/strong> (Holy Roman Emperor x Laventour) but an impressive lead-up has led to the mare getting a chance to defend her crown in Saturday\u2019s Gr.1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Sheidel, who was born and raised at Amarina Farm, won last year\u2019s Oakleigh Plate and competed well in both the Newmarket Handicap and William Reid Stakes but the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor didn\u2019t race at the same level in the spring.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Sheidel ran third to She Will Reign in the Gr.1 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley, but she was unplaced in subsequent lesser races. Co-trainer David Hayes said a long campaign was the likely cause of flat performances.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u201cLast season, she went through the spring, then went and ran second in the Winterbottom, came back and went huge in the autumn and won the Oakleigh Plate,\u201d Hayes, who trains Sheidel in partnership with his son Ben and nephew Tom Dabernig, said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u201cBecause she had been up for 12 months, she just had a bit of an ordinary spring. I think she just didn\u2019t come up.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u201cShe did really well in her break and he (owner Robert Crabtree) was thinking of retiring her but I said, \u2018why not give her another go to defend her title?\u2019 and she has come back well.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">The Hall of Fame trainer said Sheidel\u2019s two unofficial trials have gone some way to justifying the decision to press on with the winner of 15 of 34 starts.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u201cShe trialled really well here (at Flemington) first and then we went to Kilmore,\u201d Hayes said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u201cThe way she trialled at Kilmore, where she won the trial by 11 lengths, she was just cruising all the way.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u201cBut she goes really well at Caulfield and her latest trial was excellent so we\u2019re hoping she can go as well this year.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-NZ\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Damien Oliver will ride Sheidel in the Oakleigh Plate.
